Consulting Proposal Template

A consulting proposal turns a discovery call into a decision. It shows the client you understood the problem, explains how you'll work, and makes the investment easy to choose. This template sets out a three-phase engagement, from diagnosis to a roadmap, with three options the client picks from.

Thank you for the conversation about where [Client Name] is today and where you want to be. This proposal sets out what we heard, how we'd approach it, what you'll receive, and three ways to work together.

Where You Are

[Summarize the situation in the client's words, for example: revenue has grown 40% in two years, but margins have fallen, delivery times are slipping, and the leadership team doesn't agree on what to fix first.]

What Success Looks Like

By the end of this engagement, [Client Name] will have:

  • A clear diagnosis of what's driving the problem, backed by your own data
  • A short list of priorities the leadership team agrees on
  • A 12-month roadmap with owners, milestones, and measures

Our Approach

We work in three phases. Each ends with a working session where we review findings together and agree on the next step before moving on.

1. Diagnose (weeks 1 to 3). Interviews with leadership and key staff, a review of financials and operating data, and a look at how work actually flows through the business. You'll see early findings at the end of week 2.

2. Decide (weeks 4 to 5). We present the root causes and three to five options for addressing them, with the cost, effort, and expected impact of each. In a half-day workshop, the leadership team chooses its priorities.

3. Plan (weeks 6 to 7). We turn the chosen priorities into a 12-month roadmap with owners, milestones, and the measures that will show whether it's working.

What You'll Receive

  • A findings report with the evidence behind each conclusion
  • Options analysis and a facilitated decision workshop
  • A 12-month roadmap and a one-page summary for your team
  • A 60-minute handover session for the people who will own the work

Frequently asked questions

How do consultants price a proposal?

Most price the engagement, not the hours: a fixed fee for a defined diagnostic or project, and a monthly fee for ongoing advisory work. Offering two or three options lets the client choose the depth that fits their budget without negotiating your rate.

What should a consulting proposal include?

The client's situation and objectives in their words, your approach and phases, what they'll receive, the timeline, what you need from them, the fees and payment terms, and how either side can end the engagement.

Is this consulting proposal template free?

Yes. Read and copy the full text on this page, or edit it online and see it as your client will. When it's ready, start a free Clientary trial to send it or download it as a PDF.

Has a lawyer reviewed this template?

No. It's a general starting point written by Clientary, not legal advice, and it hasn't been reviewed by a lawyer for your situation or the laws where you and your client work. Have your own counsel review it before you use or sign it.
